What can I claim for a police or emergency services injury?

The amount you can claim depends on your injury along with how and where it happened. Here’s a summary of potential entitlements:

This includes weekly payments to compensate you for lost income while you’re off work, and medical expenses to cover your healthcare, rehabilitation treatments and travel costs.

If your whole person impairment (WPI) assessment is over a certain threshold, you might also qualify for a permanent impairment payout. Finally, a work injury damages (WID) payout may be available as a lump sum if your injury was caused by your employer’s negligence.

Important update: NSW workers compensation laws are changing from 1 July.

NSW first responders and exempt workers: what you should know.

The law in NSW is changing from 1 July 2026, introducing stricter requirements for psychological injuries for most workers. But if you’re a police officer, paramedic, firefighter or another first responder, you’ll remain largely exempt from these changes.

If work has affected your mental health and you have questions about how you might be impacted, it’s important to seek free advice to know where you stand.

Law Partners is a leading firm of choice for hundreds of emergency services workers across NSW. You can contact our specialist NSW workers compensation team on 13 15 15, start a live chat, or request a callback on our website.

For first responders who’d like to access peer-led guidance, we recommend the welcoming service offered by Emerge & See, which offers free and confidential mental health and well-being support and resources. You can connect via their website or via their app on the Apple or Google app store.

Our police and emergency services injury lawyers will get you more compensation.

Police or emergency services injuries can often mean time off work, unplanned expenses, and financial stress. At Law Partners, we get to know you and your family to learn about your life before you were injured. We look beyond your injuries, to understand your work, family, social and financial situation. Then we look at what’s changed. Many of our clients’ emergency services injuries have led to other life complications and health issues. By getting to know you personally we identify these issues to make sure we claim all your entitlements. That’s why you’ll get more compensation with Law Partners on your side.

What injuries can I claim for?

No matter how you’ve been injured, we’re here to help. Emergency services workers are generally at higher risk of injuries from trips and falls and motor vehicle accidents. Here are general situations that are among the most common emergency services work claims:

Police line of duty.

Injuries from chasing and apprehending offenders, gun belt-related injuries, and other accidents in the line of duty.

Ambulance officers and paramedics.

Overexertion and body stress, exposure to harmful substances, and assaults can lead to injuries to ambulance workers and paramedics.

Firefighting and rescues.

Falls and jumps, direct contact with fire, hazardous materials, excessive heat and lifting significant weights can all be injury causes.

Psychological injuries.

You can also claim for psychological injuries such as PTSD, whether they were caused by a one-off incident or have accumulated over time from a series of traumatic events.

Police and emergency services lawyer FAQs.

Yes, if you’re a casual employee injured at work, you’re entitled to claim workers compensation. Workers compensation for casual employees is not only limited to citizens and permanent residents. If you’re on a visa that permits you to work in Australia and you’re injured at work, you’re still eligible to claim workers compensation benefits.

A no win no fee lawyer offers to run your case for you and only get paid when you win. If you choose the right lawyer, it’s an excellent option that allows you to pursue your claim without any risk, but it’s important to check the lawyer’s costs agreement to fully understand what’s covered. With some no win no fee lawyers you can still end up having to pay thousands of dollars in disbursements if your case is unsuccessful. This is because their no win no fee agreements cover their professional fees but not the costs they incur. At Law Partners, our no win no fee, no disbursements guarantee covers all our costs and disbursements as well as our professional fees, so you can pursue your claim with peace of mind.

If your workers compensation claim is denied, there are options open to you to dispute the decision.

The insurer that has denied your claim must notify you in writing of their reasons for the denial and provide information on the next steps available to you.

Here are some examples of common disputes:

  • The insurer doesn’t consider the person making the claim to be a ‘worker’ (under the legislation).
  • The insurer considers that employment wasn’t the main contributing factor to the injury.
  • It wasn’t ‘reasonably necessary’ to have the medical treatment or to incur other expenses claimed.

If you have a dispute with an insurer, here are some options:

  • Request an internal review by the insurer, who must respond within 14 days.
  • Lodge a dispute directly with the PIC.
  • Call Law Partners for free legal advice – it may be possible for us to provide you with a lawyer at no cost to you.

How our police and emergency services injury lawyers can help you.

Here are four ways our personal injury lawyers can get more compensation for your injury:

Dispute the workers compensation insurer’s decision if they’ve denied any part of your claim or any treatment.

Check your WPI assessment to see if you qualify for a permanent impairment lump sum payment.

Investigate the circumstances of your injury to determine if there are other claims you can make, such as a lump sum damages claim.

If you’re unable to work, we can review your superannuation policies to see if you’re entitled to a TPD lump sum.

I moved from another firm to Law Partners and right from the start it was a totally different experience. My solicitor Sarah King and her paralegal Cassandra Hughes were empathetic, encouraging and highly attentive.
I received regular updates, they sought to clarify issues as they arose,
They prepared for each new step and checked in with me after each new event in the process.
They turned a scary experience into an ok experience with a positive outcome.
I cannot recommend them enough.
Thank you thank you.
