What illnesses can you claim for in Victoria?

There’s no complete “list” of what qualifies for a TPD critical or terminal illness claim in Victoria. Depending on your insurance policy, the key is that your illness has stopped you from going back to your job, or the work you’re qualified to do. Here are some critical illness categories which may be eligible for a TPD claim:

As with many illnesses, the severity of the condition determines whether a cancer diagnosis is eligible for a TPD payout. Common types of cancer that can lead to a TPD claim include breast, prostate, bowel, skin, lung, kidney, or pancreatic cancer.

A range of heart conditions may be eligible for a TPD claim if one has stopped you from working. This can include cardiomyopathy, primary pulmonary hypertension, or chronic heart disease. Speak to our friendly TPD experts for free advice on your situation.

There are many chronic illnesses which may lead to a TPD insurance payout, some of the more common conditions we see include fibromyalgia, strokes, chronic lung disease, or muscular dystrophy. Contact our specialist TPD lawyers for free advice.

Conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, motor neurone disease, dementia, cerebral palsy, or severe epilepsy are classed as neurological disorders. They may be eligible for a TPD payout, so get in touch with our specialists for free advice.

TPD payouts are often available for some of the more severe autoimmune diseases. These include multiple sclerosis, systemic lupus, vasculitis, polymyositis and dermatomyositis, or severe rheumatoid arthritis. Speak to our TPD experts today for free advice.

TPD claim stories

Making a TPD claim changed my life.

Shannelle, Trevor and Regina, like so many injured Australians, were completely unaware that they were eligible to make a TPD claim before they contacted Law Partners. Watch the video to find out how a TPD payout changed their lives.

TPD critical illness FAQs:

No, it doesn’t matter what caused your illness – if it stops you from working, you may be eligible to make a TPD claim. And if your job caused your illness, you might also be entitled to make a workers compensation claim.

It’s important to remember that some policies have specific exclusions, and you may not be able to claim for conditions that predate when your policy was taken out. If you’re not sure, it’s best to speak with one of our TPD specialists who can take a look at your policy and advise you about your specific situation, free of charge.

There’s no complete “list” of what qualifies for a TPD critical or terminal illness claim. Depending on your insurance policy, the key is that your illness has stopped you from going back to your job or stopped you from returning to the work you’re qualified to do. This might include illnesses such as cancer, autoimmune diseases, neurological disorders, or heart conditions.

For more examples of TPD claims, take a look at some of our TPD Claims Stories. The examples listed can be used as a general guide. However, you’ll need to check the criteria in your TPD insurance policy to understand exactly what you can claim for.

If you’re not sure whether you have TPD insurance cover, you can call Law Partners on 0292644474. With your permission, we’ll contact your super fund (or funds) on your behalf and find out what cover you have – there’s no cost for this service.

Yes, if you have more than one TPD policy, you may be able to make multiple TPD claims – one for each policy. This is quite a common situation, as many people have multiple superannuation funds as a result of changing jobs over the years and may have a TPD policy through each fund. Making a successful TPD super claim against one policy has no effect on any other TPD insurance you may have, but you’ll need to submit a separate claim against each policy.

It usually takes 6-12 months for a critical or terminal illness TPD claim to be finalised.

Insurance companies generally assess TPD claims within six months. Some straightforward claims are finalised sooner, however with more complicated claims insurance companies often take longer than six months to make a decision.

Once the insurance company has made its decision on a TPD claim, the trustee of the superannuation fund must make their own separate assessment. This process usually takes between one and two months.

This can vary, but TPD illness claim payout amounts typically range between $60,000 and $600,000, with many payouts being more than $200,000. The amount you can claim is called your ‘insured benefit amount’, and it will be identified on your superannuation member statement.

Thank you for the final paperwork and the transfer of funds into my account. After my car accident I was advised by my grandson’s girlfriend who is a solicitor, to get the services of a compensation law firm. We wouldn’t hesitate in recommending your company to anyone who might need a law firm in the future.
