I had to stop work because of my injury. Can I claim a TPD payout?
Most superannuation policies include TPD (total and permanent disability) insurance, which pays you a lump sum if you’re unable to work because of an injury.
Here are three questions that will help you understand whether you can make a TPD claim:
- Were you working in the 12 months prior to being injured?
- Have you been unable to return to work since being injured?
- Do you have superannuation?
If your answer to these three questions was yes, then it’s likely you can make a lump sum TPD claim for your injuries.
Which injuries are covered by TPD claims for injuries?
Any injuries that prevent you from returning to work may qualify for a lump sum TPD claim. Here are some examples of injuries that could prevent you from working:
- Carpal Tunnel
- Loss of a limb
- Back injuries resulting in spinal fusions
- Loss of speech
- Loss of hearing
There’s no complete “list” of what qualifies for a TPD claim for injury — the key is that your injury has stopped you from returning to work.
