Dr Simon Gordon: Four Corners and AHPRA investigations – what do they mean for patients?

By Michael Passaro, Senior Managing Solicitor, Law Partners Melbourne

Dr. Simon Gordon is being investigated by ABC’s Four Corners and AHPRA (The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency), following claims he repeatedly removed tissue and organs from young women for “severe” endometriosis when pathology showed they had little or no trace of the disease. These procedures reportedly took place at the Epworth Hospital.

According to the ABC, just days after management discovered the Four Corners investigation into Dr. Simon Gordon, he was asked to go on leave from Epworth Private Hospital in October 2025. He then retired from practice the following weekend and has now surrendered his registration.

But what does this mean for Simon Gordon’s Endo Health patients?

How do I know if my treatment by Dr. Simon Gordon was negligent?

Medical negligence claims are determined on the specific facts of your case and the circumstances specific to your treatment. If you can establish that any treatment or surgery was unreasonably recommended or performed and that it caused injury and loss (financial or non-economic), you may be entitled to damages.

In some circumstances, if you gave consent but the practitioner was motivated solely by an undisclosed non-therapeutic purpose, an intentional tort claim may also be available. This is a civil lawsuit alleging that you were purposefully harmed.

What should I do if I suspect negligent medical treatment?

According to Dr. Gordon’s website, he has treated more than 13,000 patients since 1997. If you were treated by Simon Gordon for endometriosis or any other condition, and you suspect your treatment was negligent, there are steps you can take to understand your options:

Before speaking with insurers, hospital representatives or posting about your experience on social media, it’s important to get independent legal advice. Early comments can be taken out of context or used to limit your options later.

Request complete copies of your medical records from Epworth Private Hospital or Dr. Gordon’s practice, including all pathology reports. If you prefer, our team can obtain these records on your behalf at no cost to you, ensuring nothing is overlooked.

Write down your symptoms before treatment, what you were told about your diagnosis, the procedures performed, and any complications or ongoing issues. These details can be critical in assessing whether the treatment you received was appropriate.

You may have seen reporting about the possibility of a class action and while group proceedings can be appropriate in certain situations, matters of this nature often involve individual circumstances, treatment histories and outcomes that can vary from person to person. Our process is tailored to understanding your specific experience and getting to know you personally. We can offer you a confidential, free case assessment on 03 8400 3100 to help you understand your options.

These situations are deeply personal for patients, and experiences of care that fall below expected standards can leave lasting physical and emotional effects.

If you believe you may have experienced any form of medical negligence (whether related to this story or more generally), I would encourage you to seek independent legal advice tailored to your circumstances.

If you’d like advice, you can call me or a member of my team on 03 8400 3100 for a confidential and no-obligation discussion. We’ll help you better understand your position and the options available to you.

Please note: This issue is presently under review by the relevant regulatory body, and no conclusions have been reached. Nothing on this page should be taken as suggesting that any allegations have been established. In a statement, Epworth HealthCare confirmed they are commissioning an independent external review of this matter.
